| Type | EMD SD-50 |
| Description |
In the mid '80s, Conrail bought over 100 of EMD's latest 6 axle type, the SD-50. These had new microprocessor engine controls, radar based wheelslip sensors, and improved dynamic brakes. These capabilities allowed the 645F diesel engine, of the 50 series locomotives, to produce 500 more horsepower than the previous 40 series, with the 645E. This caused a re-ignition of the "horsepower wars" that had reached an uneasy truce in the late '60s, when manufacturers had a hard time producing a reliable diesel of more than 3000 HP. From this beginning, new technology quickly allowed both major manufacturers to develop the 6000 HP locomotives seen today. |
