| Type | Chicago, Milwaukee, St Paul & Pacific (Milwaukee Road) GE "Little Joe" |
| Description |
These locomotives were ordered by the US State Department, for sale to the USSR after WWII.
Construction started in 1946, and by '48 three were ready. However, at that time, the Berlin
crisis forced a boycott on trade with the Russians. GE completed the initial order
of 20 units, and sent one (modified to US standard gauge) to The Milwaukee Road for testing.
The US government wanted a high price for them, and tests revealed that they were too "slipery" to work MILW's Bitterroot and Cascade mountain lines. In 1950, MILW bought 12 units for $1,000,000, and added 46 tons of concrete and iron balast to each, for improved traction. The remaining 8 units going to the São Paulo Railway (Brazil, 5) and the CSS&SB (Indiana, 3) |
